Taste Project was one of my first in University at UCA. For this part of the unit, we had to develop a narrative that showed how our 'taste' has changed or developed. Being into my guitar, I named my project, 'How our taste in Fashion has changed with the introduction of the Guitar'. The basis of the idea was to show what impact the guitar had on people through class, identity and then fashion sense, what does a guitarist wear and why?
The set is made of 6 portraits (5 A0 size prints & 1 A0 size 3D cardboard sculpture). Each portrait shows the fashion taste in the photo but also encompasses characteristics that connote the style of music that was played by the guitar at the time that fashion was popular.
The taste changes through iconic years of rock music beginning in the Renaissance era (introduction of the 'guitar') to the 50's/60's to the Hippie and Glam era, heading to Punk and ending with Grunge where the fashion influence has settled.
Each portrait tells the story behind the era but also reflects the music and the guitars influence on fashion, narrating what a rocker/ guitarist looked like through the ages.
The portraits were mainly made with hands on techniques, using scalpels, paints and tapes but also edits on photoshop. The first image in the series ('Renaissance Rocker') was made of 12 sheets of cardboard with the paper stuck on. I made a mini sculpture from the piece with the left over cutouts: seen at the top of the page and below.
