Working For Vaughan Oliver and The Pixies was absolutely incredible and something I never thought would happen! Being a fan of both Vaughan and the band, this project was no brainer but I never contemplated that I would get through the whole process and get chosen for the gig, I'm still shocked now (I fan girled very hard and shed a tear at the gig when I saw my work). To say thank you, they gave me a free ticket to the gig.
In October of 2018, The Pixies did a week long gig in London, Camden as part of their 'Come on Pilgrim... It's Surfer Rosa' tour which also travelled to LA and New Mexico. When given the brief we were told to design footage in a long 11520x1080 format but upon getting to the event, saw that there was no long screen, instead 6 individual 1920x1080 screens. Things had clearly been switched up but it didn't matter as they used the films as separate ones.
The screen layout consisted of one huge screen playing behind the band and three smaller screens on either side of the main one. The 3 smaller screens were raised in height the further along they went, creating a dynamic for the gig and all videos were projected onto them by unique VJ's.
I had different sections of my film shown. The motion graphics glitch, the lens flare bedroom scene (grey screen at the top) and a morphed textural shape. Some of my films were played on their own whilst others were combined and overlaid with over contributed work. To spice things up, the VJ's changed some sections of mine to black and white, playing those on the even numbered projectors while the coloured version played on the odd numbered ones. Other edits by the VJ's included slowing down sections of my film and letting others go normal pace but the most of it left the films to play as I'd made them.
In addition to my work being played with the band, they used it during the sections where Vaughan Oliver spoke about his work (pre-gig). This section of the event celebrated the journey of the band as well as Vaughn's artwork for them.
